* FEATURE: Cache embed contents in the database
This will be useful for features that rely on the semantic content of topics, like the many AI features
Co-authored-by: Roman Rizzi <rizziromanalejandro@gmail.com>
Applies the embed_unlisted site setting consistently across topic embeds, including those created via the WP Discourse plugin. Relatedly, adds a embed exception to can_create_unlisted_topic? check. Users creating embedded topics are not always staff.
Many blog posts use these to illustrate and images were previously omitted
Additionally strip superfluous HTML and BODY tags from embed HTML.
This was incorrectly returned from server.
This commit implements many changes to topic and comments embedding. It
deprecates the class_name field from EmbeddableHost and suggests using
the className parameter. discourse_username parameter has been
deprecated and it will fetch it from embedded site from the author or
discourse-username meta.
See the updated code sample from Admin > Customize > Embedding page.
* FEATURE: Add className parameter for Discourse embed
* DEV: Hide class_name from EmbeddableHost
* DEV: Deprecate class_name field of EmbeddableHost
* FEATURE: Use either author or discourse-username meta tag
* DEV: Deprecate discourse_username parameter
* DEV: Improve embed code sample
The #pluck_first freedom patch, first introduced by @danielwaterworth has served us well, and is used widely throughout both core and plugins. It seems to have been a common enough use case that Rails 6 introduced it's own method #pick with the exact same implementation. This allows us to retire the freedom patch and switch over to the built-in ActiveRecord method.
There is no replacement for #pluck_first!, but a quick search shows we are using this in a very limited capacity, and in some cases incorrectly (by assuming a nil return rather than an exception), which can quite easily be replaced with #pick plus some extra handling.
This is a much better description of its function. It performs idempotent normalization of a URL. If consumers truly need to `encode` a URL (including double-encoding of existing encoded entities), they can use the existing `.encode` method.
The content from the remote site and the footer get cached for 10 minutes, so Discourse should use the default locale instead of the user locale for the footer. Otherwise Discourse might cache the message in a different language.
This patch removes some of our freedom patches that have been deprecated
for some time now.
Some of them have been updated so we’re not shipping code based on an
old version of Rails.
Ruby 2.7 or earlier `+contents` returns self.dup
when `frozen_string_literal: true`. However, Ruby 3.0 returns self
because this string is interpolated one, which is not frozen anymore.
This commit uses self.dup to return duplicated string regardless Ruby
versions.

FinalDestination now supports the `follow_canonical` option, which will perform an initial GET request, parse the canonical link if present, and perform a HEAD request to it.
We use this mode during embeds to avoid treating URLs with different query parameters as different topics.
DEV: Allow passing cook_method to TopicEmbed.import to override default
This will be used in the rss-polling plugin when we want to have
oneboxes on feed content, like youtube for example.
Over the years we accrued many spelling mistakes in the code base.
This PR attempts to fix spelling mistakes and typos in all areas of the code that are extremely safe to change
- comments
- test descriptions
- other low risk areas
If the associated page of a remote url passed to `TopicEmber.new(remote_url)` contained a malformed link like: `<a href="(http://foo.bar)">Baz</a>` it would raise an uncaught exception:
```
Job exception: Invalid scheme format: (http
```
This reverts commit 20780a1eee.
* SECURITY: re-adds accidentally reverted commit:
03d26cd6: ensure embed_url contains valid http(s) uri
* when the merge commit e62a85cf was reverted, git chose the 2660c2e2 parent to land on
instead of the 03d26cd6 parent (which contains security fixes)
Discourse.cache is a more consistent method to use and offers clean fallback
if you are skipping redis
This is part of a larger change that both optimizes Discoruse.cache and omits
use of setex on $redis in favor of consistently using discourse cache
Bench does reveal that use of Rails.cache and Discourse.cache is 1.25x slower
than redis.setex / get so a re-implementation will follow prior to porting
Doing .pluck(:column).first is a very common pattern in Discourse and in
most cases, a limit cause isn't being added. Instead of adding a limit
clause to all these callsites, this commit adds two new methods to
ActiveRecord::Relation:
pluck_first, equivalent to limit(1).pluck(*columns).first
and pluck_first! which, like other finder methods, raises an exception
when no record is found
Zeitwerk simplifies working with dependencies in dev and makes it easier reloading class chains.
We no longer need to use Rails "require_dependency" anywhere and instead can just use standard
Ruby patterns to require files.
This is a far reaching change and we expect some followups here.
When `SiteSetting.embed_truncate` is enabled (by default), the truncated
string is mutatable and does not raise an error.
However, when the setting is disabled, the `contents` string is frozen
and immutable, and will raise a `FrozenError`.
This reduces chances of errors where consumers of strings mutate inputs
and reduces memory usage of the app.
Test suite passes now, but there may be some stuff left, so we will run
a few sites on a branch prior to merging
