Since extensions may add nested includes, we need to make sure they are eager-loaded to avoid excessive queries. For example, when the tags extension adds "tags" and "tags.state".
Closes#268. Not going to bother with a preview SVG or anything fancy for now – we can think about that as part of #746. Right now it's just good to finally get this functionality in!
Also need to think about apple-touch-icon, msTile stuff, and social sharing image. Not sure if this is all too much for core, but it's definitely too much for the current Appearance page layout. Again, something to think about as part of #746.
Code is a bit rough around the edges, but figured there's not much point in using the command bus properly since #870.
- All custom JS variables are now preloaded into the `app.data` object, rather than directly on the `app` object. This means that admin settings are available in `app.data.settings` rather than `app.settings`, etc.
- Cleaner route handler generation
- Renamed ConfigureClientView to ConfigureWebApp, though the former still exists and is deprecated

If the authorization header is stripped by CGI wrap,
the server can be configured to send the value along
in an environment variable. If the server admin sticks
to this convention, Flarum can now use this variable.

It became apparent in https://github.com/flarum/core/issues/319#issuecomment-170558573 that there was no way for extensions to add filter parameters to the /api/posts endpoint (e.g. /api/posts?filter[mentioned]=1). Simply adding an event to modify the `$where` array severely limits how much can be done with the query. This commit refactors the controller so that filters are applied directly to the query Builder, and exposes the Builder in a new `ConfigurePostsQuery` event.
This means that flood control can be disabled depending on the nature of the request (i.e. when authenticated using a master API key). The particular use case for this is to allow using the API to migrate data from an old forum.
Because extensions can have dependencies injected, a RouteCollection could potentially be instantiated, and thus the ConfigureRoutes event would be called before extensions have had a chance to subscribe to it. Instead, we instantiate the RouteCollection on demand, but only populate it when the application boots.
- Use Symfony's Session component to work with sessions, instead of a custom database model. Separate the concept of access tokens from sessions once again.
- Extract common session/remember cookie logic into SessionAuthenticator and Rememberer classes.
- Extract AuthenticateUserTrait into a new AuthenticationResponseFactory class.
- Fix forgot password process.
- Use cookies + CSRF token for API authentication in the default client. This mitigates potential XSS attacks by making the token unavailable to JavaScript. The Authorization header is still supported, but not used by default.
- Make sensitive/destructive actions (editing a user, permanently deleting anything, visiting the admin CP) require the user to re-enter their password if they haven't entered it in the last 30 minutes.
- Refactor and clean up the authentication middleware.
- Add an `onhide` hook to the Modal component. (+1 squashed commit)
Specifically, the crash would occur when the first notification had a subject without a discussion relationship (e.g. the Subscriptions extension's newPost notification, where the subject itself was a discussion). Instead of simply eager loading the nested subject.discussion relationship, we load discussions manually instead.
This means that the "Start a Discussion" button will still be enabled if the user is not allowed to start globally, but only in certain tags.
Also add some other stuff to the changelog.

The default XHR error handler produce an alert which is appropriate to the response status code. It can be overridden per-request (by specifying the `errorHandler` option) so that the alert can be suppressed or displayed in a different position (e.g. inside a modal).

If the version in the settings table mismatches the code version, then we return a 503 error for all requests coming through index.php and api.php, while admin.php serves up a form prompting for the database password which will run outstanding migrations.
We now use Symfony's Translation component. Yay! We get more powerful pluralisation and better a fallback mechanism. Will want to implement the caching mechanism at some point too. The API is replicated in JavaScript, which could definitely use some testing.
Validators have been refactored so that they are decoupled from models completely (i.e. they simply validate arrays of user input). Language packs should include Laravel's validation messages.

Spent quite a while looking into the best solution here and ended up going with three separate classes. Thanks to @Luceos for the PR that got this rolling (#518). My reasoning is:
- The task of routing and URL generation is independent for each section of the app. Take Flarum\Api\Users\IndexAction for example. I don't want to generate a URL to a Flarum route... I specifically want to generate a URL to an API route. So there should be a class with that specific responsibility.
- In fact, each URL generator is slightly different, because we need to add a certain prefix to the start (e.g. /api)
- This also allows us to get rid of the "flarum.api" prefix on each route's name.
- It's still DRY, because they all extend a base class.
At the same time, I could see no reason this needed to be "interfaced", so all of the classes are concrete.
Goes a long way to fixing #123 - still just a few places left remaining with hardcoded URLs.
Previously, clicking the "mark all notifications as read" button would individually mark each of the visible notifications as read. Since we now always show a badge with the number of unread notifications, we need to make sure that all notifications (not just the visible ones) can be marked as read. Otherwise it would be possible to get stuck with an unread badge there.
This commit adds a new API endpoint which marks *all* of a user's notifications as read. The JSON-API spec doesn't cover this kind of thing (updating all instances of a certain resource type), so I'm a bit unsure regarding what the endpoint should actually be. For now I've gone with POST /notifications/read, but I'm open to suggestions.

The activity system we were using was built around a separate table.
Whenever the user posted something, or deleted a post, we would sync
the table. The advantage of this was that we could aggregate activity
of all different types very efficiently.
It turns out that it came with a huge disadvantage: there was no
efficient way to enforce permissions on activity. If a user posted
something in a private tag, everyone could still see it on their
activity feed. My stopgap solution was to only sync activity for posts
that are viewable by guests, but that was way too limited.
It also turns out that aggregating activity of different types is
really not that useful, especially considering most of it is the user
making posts. So I've gotten rid of that whole overly-complicated
system, and just made the user profile display separate lists of posts
and discussions, retrieved from those respective APIs. The discussions
page is an actual discussion list too, which is pretty cool.
It's still technically possible to aggregate different activity types
(basically just aggregate API responses together), but we can do that
later if there's a need for it.
This is probably my favourite commit of the day :)

A good start I think, but still some work to do. If we go ahead with

Flarum\Core\Discussions\DiscussionsServiceProvider).

Only preloading data for basic requests w/o query params, at least for
the moment - if we have to preload for something like
/?q=test&sort=newest, we end up having to duplicate a whole lot of
logic between JS/PHP.
Explained in d1e7453ffd.
If we ever come up with a better way of doing this it should be easy to
change over, since modification of these properties by extensions is
abstracted by an Extend API.
All routes are now stored in a RouteCollection, which is then used
for dispatching by the (reusable) RouterMiddleware.
This change also entails moving all routes to the service providers.
This may be changed again later, and is done for convenience reasons
right now.
@franzliedke I didn’t realise that static properties are static to the
class they are defined on, and not each individual subclass. All of the
static members of the SerializeAction class (which are intended for
extensions to alter per-action) are being inherited by all actions.
Any ideas on how to work around this other than defining every static
member on each individual subclass?
Get rid of Permissible - too complex and inefficient. Replace with:
- a “Locked” trait which works similarly but only evaluates logic on
hydrated models.
- a “VisibleScope” trait which also works similarly but only scopes
queries
This is all we need, Permissible is overkill. There is only one
instance where we have to duplicate some logic
(Discussion::scopeVisiblePosts and Post::allow(‘view’, …)) but it’s
barely anything.
Haven’t decoupled for now, we can definitely look at doing that later.
Permissions table seeder slightly updated.
Also did a bit of a query audit, there’s still a lot to be done but
it’s much better than it was. Some relatively low-hanging fruit
detailed in EloquentPostRepository.
It works but it’s not the most pretty thing in the world. @franzliedke
Would be great if you could take a look at the whole formatting API and
work your magic on it sometime… my brain is fried!
This required some interface changes (mostly changing Laravel's or
Symfony's request and response classes to those of Zend's Diactoros.
Some smaller changes to the execution flow in a few of the abstract
action base classes, but nothing substantial.
Note: The request and response classes are immutable, so we usually
need to return new instances after modifying the old ones.
Originally the user activity feed was implemented using UNIONs. I was
looking at make an API to add activity “sources”, or extra UNION
queries (select from posts, mentions, etc.) but quickly realised that
this is too slow and there’s no way to make it scale.
So I’ve implemented an API which is very similar to how notifications
work (see previous commit). The `activity` table is an aggregation of
stuff that happens, and it’s kept in sync by an ActivitySyncer which is
used whenever a post it created/edited/deleted, a user is
mentioned/unmentioned, etc.
Again, the API is very simple (see Core\Activity\PostedActivity +
Core\Handlers\Events\UserActivitySyncer)
It turns out that the idea of “sending” a notification is flawed. (What
happens if the notification subject is deleted shortly after? The
notified user would end up with a dud notification which would be
confusing. What about if a post is edited to mention an extra user? If
you sent out notifications, the users who’ve already been mentioned
would get a duplicate notification.)
Instead, I’ve introduced the idea of notification “syncing”. Whenever a
change is made to a piece of data (e.g. a post is created, edited, or
deleted), you make a common notification and “sync” it to a set of
users. The users who’ve received this notification before won’t get it
again. It will be sent out to new users, and hidden from users who’ve
received it before but are no longer recipients (e.g. users who’ve been
“unmentioned” in a post).
To keep track of this, we use the existing notifications database
table, with an added `is_deleted` column. The syncing/diffing is
handled all behind the scenes; the API is extremely simple (see
Core\Notifications\DiscussionRenamedNotification +
Core\Events\Handlers\DiscussionRenamedNotifier)
Perhaps also in user activity stream. They are used in the mentions
extension.
In order to generate the excerpt, each formatter can implement a
“strip” method which basically converts block formatting into inline
formatting.
